Annika Sirkin’s doctoral thesis aims at developing an extensive compilation and final interpretation of recent investigations of the settlements in the surroundings of the Viking burial site Kaup near Wiskiauten, today located in the Russian Kaliningrad region. Excavations and surveys were carried out between 2005 and 2011 by the Centre for Baltic and Scandinavian Archaeology in Schleswig in cooperation with the Archaeological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow. The thesis focuses on issues relating to the internal structure of the settlement areas, their relative and absolute chronology as well as local and supra-regional influences. She defended her doctoral thesis in 2020 at Kiel University.
